'ohrenhoch, the Noise Shop' – a small salesroom of 20 square metres with a shop window and with a basement – was opened on December 15th, 2007 by Knut Remond and Katharina Moos.
The sound gallery 'ohrenhoch, the Noise Shop' is the only one of its kind in the world as a new way of presenting Sound Art, through a specific sound-architectural space concept.
The special loudspeaker installation, and the sober wooden furnishing, both designed by Knut Remond, are the basic elements of the sound gallery.
Every Sunday, since February 2008, 'ohrenhoch, the Noise Shop' presents over the special loudspeaker installation a composition for electroacoustic music, acousmatic music, sounddesign, soundscape, audio drama or field reccording. Each composition may be heard on each of two consecutive Sundays, continuously from 2 PM until 9 PM, played back as a loop by a CD- or mp3-Player. So 26 works or composers are presented at 'ohrenhoch' per year, and recorded in the internet.
The entrance is free.
The listeners can walk into the Noise Shop, without having to miss a beginning, every Sunday at any time between 2pm and 9pm. The ohrenhoch-concept is in particular that the sounds can freely develop in their complexity within the space, there is effectively no beginning or end.
There is a flyer laid out at 'ohrenhoch', in alternating neon colours, in A6 format, with the description of the actual work by the composer, the short biography and the web address of the composer.
The visitors can ask the gallery owners about the composer and the work, give feedback, compare notes, make contacts, etc. during the ohrenhoch Sundays.
During the ohrenhoch-Sundays, a selection of non-alcoholic drinks, including the fresh special ohrenhoch tea is offered at the little bar.
ohrenhoch's visitors, adults as well as children, appreciate the singularity of immerging in an auditory world in an unforced atmosphere.
On the average, 20 persons per Sunday are visiting 'ohrenhoch', thus more than 1000 visitors per year.
'ohrenhoch' regularly takes part in the events taking place four times a year in Berlin-Neukölln (Frühlingserwachen, 48 Stunden Neukölln, NachtundNebel, Adventsparcours). These events are reserved for the ohrenhoch-Kids and youngsters: They present their actual production to a wide public.
The loudspeaker installation was conceived and designed for 5 loudspeakers in stereo by Knut Remond. There are three loudspeakers in the middle range on the ceiling, a bass subwoofer on the floor with the membrane pointing to the ceiling, and a tweeter on a shelf on the side of the bar, its membrane also pointing to the ceiling. The listeners are in the middle of the piece being presented at any position in the space. The visitors themselves define their way of listening. They may sit down and stay as long as they want, walk around, leave the space, return, etc.
Nine wooden stools and the bar, too, are conceived and designed by Knut Remond. The space together with the loudspeaker installation allows a new kind of reception of Sound Art, and is an oasis for special listening experiences.
In 'ohrenhoch', scores, diagrams, notes and objects may also be exhibited together with the presented work.
'ohrenhoch' also presents sound- and video-installations by artists who emphasize the interconnection between image and sound, sound and image in different ways with their content and expression.
The videos are projected onto the wall in the ohrenhoch basement.
'ohrenhoch' is also a place to make possible the presentation of issues and the complex of themes concerning the multimedia developments, in a variety of ways: with lectures, workshops, exhibitions.
Live Acts take place at irregular intervals at ohrenhoch. These are special events:
The program of the ohrenhoch Sundays is made fairly short-termed - about 2 to 8 weeks before, so that current issues and positions can be incorporated, and reacting and interacting between artists or their work, 'ohrenhoch' and the visitors, can take place.
