Serkin Diabelli Beethoven-17 Noise Removal Process - created for ohrenhoch
by Spin-17
Spin-17 presents a "performance" of Rudolph Serkin performing Ludwig Van Beethoven's variation's on a theme by Anton Diabelli. Initially created through turntable manipulation, the recording undergoes various stages and degrees of "noise removal" (noise being considered as any given sound, from ground hum to scratching to actual melodic phrases). Additionally Motoko intones various vocal impressions of the process itself. In a sense, this piece can be considered a commentary on the trend of re-releasing historical recordings (such as from acetates or 78's) after modern noise reduction techniques and remastering have been applied.
Spin-17 (Ed Chang: electronics, guitar, saxophone / Motoko Shimizu: voice/turntable, toys)
is a NY-based experimental project which explores contrasts and connections between harmony and noise, electronics and acoustics, toddlers and tea-totallers, obscenity and poetry. Spin-17 mixes improvisation with experimental composition (with a good amount of caffeine blended in). The effect of diverse influences from Mauricio Kagel to Warner Brothers cartoon soundtracks to early Siouxie and the Banshees can be heard like a diamond in the eye. Spin-17 has done performances in NYC at Tonic, ABC noRio, The Knitting Factory, CBGB's, The Brecht Forum, Roulette Intermedium, and City College of New York (as well as many other cities in the United States).
