Manuel Liebeskind on his Soundtrack 'Eugene Is Down':
The first version of 'Eugene Is Down' was presented in February 2008 as an introduction to the author, journalist and singer, Eugene S. Robinson’s book 'Fight: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Ass-Kicking but Were Afraid You'd Get Your Ass Kicked for Asking' printed at the end of January. I call this composition a soundtrack. It uses speech samples and fragments from Robinson, who’s ’singing’ with his band Oxbow has also been described as wailing, shouting, whispering and crying, as its basic material. These basic elements have been woven into complex sequences and electronically manipulated. This has created a slightly frightening electronic choir of men’s voices which illustrates, through sound, the discrepancy between self definition, inner consciousness and surface presence, or the moment of meeting a complete stranger.
